Costume

I love making things, always have really, its something my parents instilled in us from the beginning. In my house making a praying mantis costume an orca whale, a bird birthday cake or a giant carrot was never an impossibility, only a challenge to be accepted.

Challenges accepted:

The Skriker: Little Scorpion production: 2016

“All wear utterly gorgeous, fabulous costumes by gifted designer Sofie Welvaert: ravishing surrealistic hybrids which have been shown as teasers on the company’s excellent Facebook page, along with fascinating little descriptions of their place in folk legend.”

Farleys Arcade: WoW Production: 2015

I was recently approached by WoW productions to design and create a set of costumes for the site-specific almost-history Farleys Arcade. The production included a cast of ~43, with 38 of those dressed by me. Costumes were assembled from hire items and those created especially for the show. Many of the lead characters were dressed from scratch with costume made especially for the production.

Farleys arcade was exceptionally well received with sell out audiences and stunning reviews. It was a privelage to be a part of.

News -> The costumes in Farleys Arcade was nominated for best Scenographic design in the 2015 Dunedin Theatre Awards – only to be beaten by the amazing Farleys set!

Reviews:

“Costume Designer Sofie Welvaert paid good attention to detail, I am certain that I wasn’t the only one to stop and marvel at how fine all the dresses and suits were. Most of the actors and actresses were dressed in 1860s English dress, but there were a few dressed in Steampunk style, getting many a smile from people who recognized it.

The costume in Farley’s Arcade was a marvel. “

  • I have been involved with the Gassworks Guild of Gadgeteers since it’s beginning, and in doing so have created all kinds of wonderful things – it’s a great excuse to dress up.
  • Theres a whole collection of (disorganised) punkey things i’ve done here.

Competitions

In 2012 our team from the gassworks guild of gadgeteers won the Cadbury Couture competition as part of the chocolate carnival. Since then our cosutume has been the face of the carnival, appearing in news advertisments and the Kia-ora magasine on air New Zealad – I guess they like us 🙂
