Me

Hey all, how are your bugging adventures going? Here in the chilly south of out beautiful country things are busy busy.

The top of Mt CargillHere I am, Sofie Welvaert, critter lover, artist, science geek, drama queen…among other things…

I have recently finished my Bachelor of Science in zoology and ecology, and a postgraduate certificate in ecology. Also (just for fun) I did a certificate in performing arts – and it was fun!

I have had an interest in ‘creepy crawlies’ since i was 8 years old and kept a pet grasshopper in a matchbox (which in hindsight has some ethics concerns, but at 8 I wasn’t so aware of these matters).

This my second year into a Masters in Science Communication therefore the diabolical thesis has begun. This blog was started as part of a paper I did last year, but I’m enjoying having a forum for thoughts, and an excuse to do a little research on the things I see buzzing or fluttering around on my daily adventures so I’ll keep it up (although it might be put aside from time to time due to thesis commitments). It’s also an opportunity to share some of the special things I get to see out at Orokonui, the sanctuary where I work/volunteer.

self portrait?

I’m just pottering away at this blogging thing, figuring it out as I go and posting on whatever has caught my eye of late so remember to ask if there’s a topic you want me to cover (or if i’m off topic completely, which might happen from time to time), and enjoy!

Regarding the Thesis -

it’s something i’ve mentioned before but now it (or at least the film component) has it’s own online presence, interested?

My film looks at land use in the Mackenzie/ Upper Waitaki area, and my academic component reviews effective communication for Rural New Zealand.

Ecosapiens -

I attended an amazing Hui earlier in the year. My project resulting from it was to create a series of video clips from the weekend to share some of the ‘essence’ of the Hui. I wanted to share some of our great ideas with you all.

Clip 1: Intro – what it’s all about.

Clip 2: Sustainability is like..

30 days of me -
